On Tuesday night (10 March), we held an extraordinary meeting of our Club Committee to discuss government advice for the safety of the general public around Coronavirus. The Committee were able to hear additional information from a trusted senior medical practitioner that the peak of the virus is likely to hit the UK at exactly the same time as we are due to open our show.
As a result of this advice and following in-depth discussion, we are devastated to announce that this year’s Cabaret Club production ‘Stories of our Lives’ will not be taking to the stage this month as planned.
The Committee feels strongly that it is our responsibility as a truly local community organisation to put the safety, welfare and best interests of our audiences, cast and crew before any other consideration.
We would like to place on record that this decision has not been taken lightly. We do not want to increase public concern about the virus. We recognise that, at the current time, there is no government advice to cancel events such as our show, however this advice may change in the coming days. We know that our audiences represent a wide range of people from our community as well as people who will be planning trips from all over the country to visit us. We also feel that asking our much-loved audiences to gather at our village hall at the potential height of the virus could possibly compromise the safety of many of those in high-risk groups such as the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions as well as possibly contribute to the spread of the virus in our locality.
We wish to support our colleagues working so hard in our National Health Service to combat the virus and do not wish to place undue burdens on them by taking any unnecessary risks. We have been told that government advice to wash hands more regularly, avoid touching your face unnecessarily, stay away from large gatherings, use tissues; catch it and bin it, remains the safest course of action. As a well-known (to us) medical professional puts it, “The consequences of over-reacting are far outweighed by the consequences of not taking it seriously enough.”
We felt that the best thing for us to do was to make an early and pro-active decision allowing people to change their arrangements in good time which we hope will help people avoid any financial hardship incurred by this action.
It is too early to say at this stage if we will be able to re-arrange the dates for the show. We can assure you that we will investigate every avenue to try to do this. These conversations will be ongoing over the next few days. Full refunds will be available for all ticket purchases and we will be contacting people wherever possible to arrange this.
We would appreciate it if you could remain patient while we work through this exceptionally difficult situation. If you have any questions, please contact us through our Facebook page or email [email protected].
We would like to thank everyone who has supported the club and look forward to sharing better news with you soon.

The Cabaret Club, Mawgan Porth proudly presents their 2017 show
“CLOUDS”
Rehearsals have begun for one of the local areas most eagerly awaited annual events, The Cabaret Club Show. This year we feature music from across the ages including songs from Elvis Presley, Duffy, The Carpenters, The Beatles and even 90’s rapper Shaggy. All this is mixed in true cabaret tradition with the clubs usual brand of humour and dance. The show promises to have a little something for everyone and is sure to delight young and old alike. The production team of Sue Tabner, Viv Farmer and musical director Debbie Jayne have put together another truly breathless show combing the unique talents of the cast members. As always the show features many very familiar performers our audiences know and love, some extremely talented youngsters and of course several new members to thrill you all. Last year’s “Games People Play” was a huge hit with our audiences and also with the Cornwall Drama Association as we won the award for Best Costumes at their annual theatre awards. We are hoping we can challenge again this year for this prestigious honour. We are certain that tickets for “Clouds” will sell out very quickly, so we advise you to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Why not treat yourself to a night of wonderful local entertainment which will leave you wanting even more. We promise you won’t regret it.
We still have a small number of opportunities for audience members to join The Friends of Mawgan Porth Cabaret Club, which includes priority booking, a small gift on show night, a mention in the programme and the chance to help the club financially. Membership costs just £25.00. Local businesses are also able to support the club by advertising their services in the show programme which during show week is seen by over 700 people and is widely circulated by cast and audiences alike for weeks after the show has closed. Full details of both of these offers can be found on our website or by emailing club chairman Barry Coppins on [email protected].
“Clouds” opens on Friday 10th March with curtain up at 7.30pm until Saturday 18th March 2017. Sunday 12th March is a Matinee Performance only, curtain up 2.00pm. There will be no show on Tuesday 14th March 2017. Tickets which are priced at £9.00 are available to Friends of the Cabaret Club from Friday 3rd of February 2017 and go on general sale from Friday 11th. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Sue Tabner on 07988 766 298 or by email at [email protected]
